Social Media Platforms Want Acitivity to Appear in Google Search Results
In the spring of 2009 Twitter modified the social media platform to improve search engine visibility on Google, the search engine that continus to dominates search engine activity.
Why should Twitter and You Care About Google Search?
According to Comscore, Google generates approximately 67% of all search engine activity. The remaining share is split between Yahoo, Microsoft (MSN and Bing) AOL, etc.

Twitter Profiles and "Tweets" are Searchable by Google - by Design
Google has adapted their algorithm to crawl social media profiles and updates on social media microblogging site Twitter.

To prove this, we have tested the search engine visibility of a Twitter account that had no website. Google seach engine results placed the Twitter account in positions 1 and 2 in relevant keywords and phrases. This was not by accident of course, we had optimized the Twitter account (also called "Twitter SEO") to be Twitter AND Google search friendly.
Yet, Most Social Media Content is not Search Engine Optimized
Surprisingly few Tweeters and social media marketers seem to have a handle on how to optimize - SEO - their account for Google or the Social Media Platform's own search functions. Those that do optimize do measurably better at building followers, friends and active relationships with customers that become marketing audiences.
Google Sees All
In April 2009 Twitter search engine optimized their platform to be more search engine (Google) friendly. Google's algorithm seeks profiles AND updates of social media accounts.
