Choosing Search Engine Keywords.... Keywords. They generate a great deal of attention, discussion and frustration to business owners, webmasters and marketers. Used properly, your keywords can mean the difference between ranking on Page 1 of search engine results or simply being invisible. I can’t think of one business that wants their website to be invisible. So, let’s dispel some of the myths around keywords. First of all, what is a keyword? A Keyword is a word used to promote a website to its marketing audience. Typically referenced in the context of search engine optimization, keywords largely influence internet advertising efforts as well. How important are keywords? Keywords are the foundation and fuel for SEO, search engine marketing and Internet marketing pay-per-click PPC campaigns. You might get some mileage out of randomly selected keywords, but having the RIGHT keywords on which to build these programs WILL make all the difference in the world for visibility and CTR (click through rates) and ultimately CONVERSION. The business is best qualified to assign the best website keywords, right? WRONG! Believe it or not, every business we have worked with has selected and used keywords that have little to no value in search engine visibility. They typically select keywords that represent the way they see their business, product or service. This would not be bad, except they typically don’t reflect the actual keyword search terms being used by their audiences. How are the right keywords selected? First, know who you are trying to reach. Second, know what your value proposition is. Then research to uncover the words being used by that audience to find your product, service, concept or company. Should your website drive your keyword suggestions, OR Should your keyword selections drive your website content? This is a no-brainer. ALWAYS build your website around the keywords that will put you in front of your target audiences. When implemented appropriately, each page on your website will help to tell your story and improve your visibility to search engines like Google, Yahoo, MSN, etc. When do keyword “phrases” play into the picture? Keyword phrases can be highly effective in honing in on particular concepts since every word added further defines your website. In theory, this should support your website’s visibility to your audience, when selected and implemented properly into your website.
