SEO, search engine optimization can be very effective, when done correctly.

However, most businesses don't realize that, although search engines optimization is not an exact science, there are some "rules", guidelines or best practices. 

Abiding by the rules of each search engine can make you more successful. Using unethical practices, even unknowingly may result in your website being blacklisted. Unfortunately, performing well on one search engine, does not necessarily mean you will do well on the others.

Imagine each search engine as a sandbox. The ower of each sandbox has their own rules, which they can make up as they go along. Rules from one search engine to the next may differ and they can change their rules at any time. Modifying your website to comply with the rules of one search engine may doesn't necessarily mean you're complying with the rules of the next...unless you've found a way to comply with all of their rules with one approach.

3 SEO mistakes you can avoid:

SEO Mistake #1: Stacking keywords "invisibly" in your website page content.
SEO SOLUTION: Never do this...this is seen as unethical and may result in search engine blacklisting...meaning the search engines may not list your website in keyword searches.

SEO Mistake #2: Using meta data that is far too long.
SEO SOLUTION: Comply to the basic rule of 25 keywords, 25 words/phrases in the description, and 60 characters or less in the title...of course the trick is in which keywords you place in the alloted space and how they relate to the content on your pages......Targeting, positioning and attracting qualified visitors is what truly really separates SEO pros from amatuers.

SEO Mistake #3: Relying on graphics or Flash to tell your story on the web.
SEO SOLUTION: Balance "pretty" with functional and your website will perform far better on the search engines. Flash has arguably seen it's day and faded because it will not support search engine visibility as well as optimized pages with text. In 2008 Google announced it would index Flash, however at this time it is not "weighted" in search algorithms...not to mention most Flash web designers are not optimization experts so this may be a mute point.

So, unless you are Nike or Victoria's Secret and you have market dominance which removes the need for brand recognition and search engine rank and visibility...then Flash away! (no pun intended).
